LGBT+ History Month: Reflections on Medical Advancements
In this blog, Sarah and Lucy share their gratitude for advancements in medicine, and reflect on how societal attitudes are lagging behind.
This LGBT+ History Month, we are reflecting on the remarkable strides made in medicine and the legal advancements that recognise diverse family structures. For us, an LGBT+ couple who embarked upon the journey to parenthood through IVF, these developments have been nothing short of amazing as they allowed us to create our family.
The advancements in reproductive medicine have provided countless individuals and couples, like us, the chance to fulfill their dreams of having children. Gratitude fills our hearts as we reflect on the scientific breakthroughs that enabled us to welcome our little one into the world. The joy of parenthood is immeasurable, thanks to the tireless efforts and progress within the field of medicine.
However, our journey has not been without its challenges. Despite the strides made in legal frameworks acknowledging same sex families, we have encountered microaggressions from health professionals who struggled to comprehend and recognise our unique family structure. These moments serve as stark reminders that despite the progress made there is still work to be done in developing understanding and inclusivity within the medical community.
Alongside our experiences, we have also witnessed the struggles of others within the LGBT+ community seeking to start their own families. Disturbing instances, such as known donors attempting to manipulate same-sex couples into intercourse, or misguided advice from healthcare professionals urging couples to ‘have sex with a man’ in order to become pregnant. These experiences emphasise the hurdles that still exist. Fortunately, organisations like Proud 2 b Parents provide a vital space for sharing experiences, offering support, and coming together as a community.
For us, LGBT+ History Month serves as a poignant reminder to reflect on our collective journey, appreciate the progress achieved, and recommit ourselves to equality for the entire LGBT+ community.
Best Wishes
Sarah and Lucy
