Lighting up Bolton with Inclusive Support

The Bolton Together Family Hub Project has taken a giant stride towards inclusivity and acceptance by commissioning Proud 2 b Parents to deliver essential services to the LGBT+ parents and their children in the region. This decision marks a significant step forward for the marginalised community, reaffirming the family hub's commitment to creating a nurturing environment for every family, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

In the short span of time since Proud 2 b Parents began their services, they have already touched the lives of numerous families, each with their unique stories of resilience and overcoming microaggressions to ensure their goal of a family was achieved. One such journey that underscores the challenges faced by many LGBT+ couples is that of a cis-female pair who, in their quest to start a family, encountered a lack of understanding from their GP. Instead of support, they were met with ignorance, as their healthcare provider suggested they have sex with a man – a response that highlights the lack of awareness and outright homophobia that is still prevalent in society. This stark incident underscores the urgent need for awareness and education, making Proud 2 b Parents' work even more crucial.

Similarly, the obstacles faced by couples beginning their adoption journey can also be felt. Individuals and couples have shared their journeys, which seem unjust and specific to the local agency. These roadblocks not only hamper the dreams of families but also perpetuate a cycle of exclusion and discrimination, felt by the community. Proud 2 b Parents' initiative brings support and community advocacy, which will look to support those navigating the complexities of adoption, ensuring that every child finds their forever home

Another challenge that the LGBTQ+ Community often faces is the ‘othering’ language used by some professionals. Professionals can sometimes make comments or have responses that reinforce messages that LGBQ+ Families are different or even abnormal. The importance of education and training around language, unconscious biases and ‘othering’ is evident. Proud 2 b Parents are glad to be working with partners in Bolton to assist in the journey to bridge gaps, challenge stereotypes, and foster environments where every family is celebrated, respected, and embraced, and every professional model’s inclusivity as best practice.

Looking ahead, the partnership between Proud 2 b Parents and Bolton statutory and VCSE partners is a beacon of hope, promising future inclusion, equity, and representation is clear. The prospect of building stronger links and increasing awareness about these much-needed services is incredibly exciting. By reaching out to more LGBT+ families in the area, this initiative will not only provide essential support but also create a sense of belonging and acceptance.

As we continue to grow and evolve, Proud 2 b Parents is proving that a small group of dedicated individuals can make a profound impact. Their journey is a testament to the power of community, empathy, and determination. Through their unwavering commitment to inclusivity, they are lighting up Bolton with the promise of a brighter future for all families, regardless of their backgrounds, orientations, or identities.

In Bolton, the future of parenting is looking more inclusive, supportive, and compassionate, thanks to Proud 2 b Parents and thanks to Bolton Together who recognised the value in their work. Together, they are building a stronger, more harmonious community where love truly knows no boundaries.
