From Chaos to Calm

We're Amanda and Jen, a couple of mums who have recently embarked on a journey that many parents can relate to – the after-school rollercoaster. Our amazing daughter, Emma, used to come home from school in a whirlwind of emotions, leaving us feeling like we were caught in a storm. But guess what? We've found our way out of the chaos and into calm waters.

Imagine this: the school bell rings, and Emma comes charging home like a tornado, full of energy and emotions. While we were thrilled to see her, the transition from school to home was rocky, to say the least. Homework battles, meltdowns, and general disarray seemed to be the norm, and we found ourselves struggling to restore peace.

Instead of surrendering to the chaos, we decided it was time for a change. We sat down as a family and brainstormed ways to make Emma's after-school routine smoother. We realised that structure and consistency were key. So, we devised a new plan that involved incorporating activities Emma loved and creating a calm, welcoming environment at home.

Our revamped routine involved a few simple but impactful changes:

  1. Outdoor Play: We encouraged Emma to spend some time outdoors after school, allowing her to release pent-up energy and decompress.

  2. Snack and Chat: We started having a snack together, giving Emma a chance to share her day at school while enjoying a tasty treat. This became a special bonding time for all of us.

  3. Homework Corner: We designated a quiet space for homework, equipped with all the necessary supplies. This focused environment helped Emma concentrate better.

  4. Creative Outlets: Recognising Emma's love for art, we introduced drawing and coloring activities, giving her a creative outlet for self-expression.

  5. Early Dinner: We adjusted our dinner time slightly earlier, ensuring Emma had enough time to wind down before bedtime.

The impact of these changes was nothing short of miraculous. Emma's after-school meltdowns decreased significantly. She seemed more relaxed, happier, and more willing to talk about her day. The chaos that once ruled our evenings was replaced by laughter, engaging conversations, and a newfound sense of harmony.

Our after-school chaos to calmness taught us the power of a well-thought-out routine. As parents, we realised that sometimes, all it takes is a little adjustment, patience, and a lot of love to transform a challenging situation into a peaceful one.
